Smoked Sandwich
Schwartz’s Deli Montreal Quebec – April 2019
Schwartz’s opened on New years even 1928, changing the smoked meat landscape forever. Talk to aficionados and they will tell you there are two at the top of the list and this is one of them.
The Food
I opted for what millions of people have had before me. A smoked meat sandwich with mustard, large pickle and a cherry coke.
The meat was tender, smokey without tasting harsh and a flavour that was not too salty. You could really taste the meat without being hidden by that nitrate salty taste you see too often. The Mustard cut through the fatty taste complimenting it on the way and the pickle well. It was big, tangy and the perfect side dish. Top it all off with fries and a cherry coke and you forget all your troubles and wonder why you didn’t wander in earlier.
Leonard Cohen said “Some say that no one ever leaves Montreal, for that city, like Canada itself, is designed to preserve the past, a past that happened somewhere else.”
I think he was talking about the meat!
Schwartz’s Deli
When you’ve been in business for over 90 years you don’t have to explain yourself to anybody. That is the feeling you get when you walk in Schwartz’s. Unapologetic, authentic food being made the right way because that’s just how they do it. No truffle oil or foie gras, just honest food built on almost a century of tradition.
If you are in Montreal, heck or you just really really like smoked meat then you should check out Schwartz’s Deli.
On a side note, if you are a Leonard Cohen fan the world famous mural is just a block away and you can stop by and tip your hat to Canada’s Eternal Prince.
